You will retrace the route of the famous 617 Squadron's training run as they practised their low-level flying, to perfect their 'dambusting' technique over the twin towers.
Enjoy a flight of approximately 20 or 30 minutes, reaching a height of 1500 feet, to obtain an unrivalled view of some of the Peak District's most breathtaking scenery, before proceeding alongside the Ladybower, Derwent and Howden dams themselves.
You will gain a unique insight into the skill and bravery of the 617 Squadron in their Lancaster Bombers, as they prepared for their daring mission to destroy the Mohne and Eder dams in Germany's Ruhr Valley during World War II.

It was a great honour to fly Joe Calverley, DFM*, an original 617 Squadron Member, (aged 85 but fit as a fiddle!) on a Dambusters trip taken from The Grouse at Glossop, in 2007. Joe is pictured above with Ground Crew members, Charlotte and Laura, proudly displaying his Commemorative Certificate.
Joe was a Flight Engineer on one of the Lancaster planes. Despite being a heroic airman, he had never experienced being in a helicopter and we were privileged to know, he was very impressed with his flight over the practice ground used by himself and his Comrades.
It was the first time Joe had flown down the designated route in the Derwent Valley since the low flying practice missions in 1943. In Joe's own words he described the Dambusters Run as 'a never-to-be-forgotten experience' and commented: "There are parts of the Peak you can only truly enjoy from the air and this is one of them. Peak District views don't come any better than those from Pennine's helicopter over the Derwent Valley".
Joe's current activities include being a volunteer, working in the Civil Engineering Department on the East Lancashire Railway. The flight was a gift from his fellow volunteers on the ELR who had a whip round for his 85th Birthday.
* DFM - Distinguished Flying Medal - an award granted to Non-Commissioned Officers (NCOs) and Airmen of the Royal Air Force and of the Fleet Air Arm while serving under an Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief in the RAF for exceptional valour, courage or devotion to duty whilst flying in active operations against the enemy. The DFM was instituted by Royal Warrant on June 3, 1918. It bears the same relation to the Air Force medal, as does DFC to AFC.
